Welcome back to the Team Room, here with the OnesReady crew.  On this Episode Roomba enlightens us on the dangers of swimming fast and shares his experiences as a TACP.

Intro:

You're listening to the Ones Ready podcast, a team of Air Force Special Operators forged in combat with over 70 years of combined operational experience as well as the decade of selection instructor experience. If you're tired of settling and you want to do something, you truly believe in, you're in the right place. Now here's your favorite CCT personality, JTAC extraordinaire, embracer of the ridiculous face, and like the shortest operator you'll ever meet, Peaches.

(00:28):

Peaches basically gives Roomba control of the podcast.

WHO IS ROOMBA?

(01:32):

Roomba breaks down his reasons for choosing TACP. Naturally water and Army jokes follow.

We learn that Roomba spent over a decade on the conventional Army side of the house before switching to the AFSOC side.

Discussion about the difference between working for a huge Army element vs being on a small team.

Aaron insults the entire United States Army. Roomba saves us.

Peaches asks Roomba about how the chain of command works while attached to a sister service.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

(06:21):

The TACP chain of command mirrors the Army chain of command to ensure the AF assets are deployed correctly.

ROMAD

(07:57):

Roomba talks about how quickly he was deployed once he got on team and explains ROMAD.

Basically Roomba deployed as soon as he got on team because his supervisor was awesome. Did a bunch of training with the 5 SFG guys. Deploys and has a great time. The team room erupts in jealousy. Mostly Aaron.

As soon as Roomba returned from his first deployment he knocked out JTAC school and Airborne. When opportunity knocks you need to be ready.

NOT A FAST SWIMMER

(11:43):

Peaches tries to keep Roomba humble by talking about swimming.

Roomba is a good slow swimmer. Pretty comfortable with underwaters.

While in the pipeline Roomba did participate in water based training on a regular basis.

Roomba talk about his perception on the latest TACP water training requirements.

RUCKING

(14:59):

Brian asks about rucking. Specifically for prospective TACP candidates.

If you want to be a TACP you need to be a rucking machine.

THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENT IS NOT THE STANDARD.

Train smart and build up to it.

We will go more in depth on rucking at a later date.

Brian and Roomba discuss recovery rucks and equipment preferences.

CONVENTIONAL TACP

(18:14):

Primary mission of TACP is to integrate all echelons of firepower for max effectiveness.

TACP’s are integrating firepower from the Ops Center down to the team level outside the wire.

Peaches talks about his experience at the Weapons school and differences he noticed between conventional TACP’s and CCT’s.

Roomba talks about how many moving pieces and people there are in a conventional Army unit that TACP’s have to account for. On the Special Operations side the teams are smaller and therefore tactics change.

Peach asks Roomba about the different kinds of Army units that TACP’s support.

Roomba has worked with Armor, Cavalry, Scouts, Air Assault and Airborne. Armor is his “bread and butter”.

Aaron and Roomba discuss the math involved in coordinating attacks with mechanized armor. It’s complicated.

Aaron talks about how confusing time zones are. It’s fun.

ADVANCED TRAINING

Roomba resume:

Weapons School, Arctic, RSLC etc.

Brian asks about which schools are required/available.

Roomba talks about the opportunities for advanced schools as a TACP. It’s a lot.

Roomba is slotted to go to Ranger school. He knows some of the instructors there. Double edged sword…

Peach and Roomba talk about their time spent together at Weapons School.

NORMAL DAY FOR A TACP

(32:54):

Morning PT, JTAC range work, intel dumps, weapons training, heritage room time.

You’ll have to listen to hear about heritage rooms…

SOF TACP

(36:58):

Roomba breaks down the difference he’s experienced moving into the SOF TACP role.

Smaller teams with more specialized training.

Aaron Trent and Brian talk about their time with SOF TACP’s and what they thought.

Roomba talks about the selection process to become a SOF TACP. Focused on being better everyday. Compete with the guys around you. Always exceed the minimum standard.

Peaches asks Roomba to explain the difference between TACP and CCT.

Basically, TACP’s cover down on multiple echelons within the Army as a JTAC and don’t have the inherent assault zones skillset.

Aaron talks about how all 4 Spec War Career fields work every mission set from their own set of expertise.

Peach and Roomba discuss some of the factors that may be considered when choosing between CCT and TACP to accomplish a mission.

Roomba shares a story from a deployment about his working relationship with a CCT.

Aaron and Trent talk about their view on how JTAC’s are used and the relationship between Spec War Teammates.
