Moving Towards Obstacles
Peaches asks Trent about surmounting obstacles.
How we perceive obstacles is important. Taking fear or anxiety and turning it into a positive. View events as opportunities for improvement, or adrenaline dumps. “What’s the worst that could happen”. Aaron has a thought.
Trent and Aaron talk about dying. Peach and Aaron discuss the dangers of EOD. “Initial success or total failure”.
Trent talks about being afraid of heights. Apparently it’s not uncommon in the community. Skydiving doesn’t trigger the heights fear the way fast roping does.
Brian and Peaches talk about fast roping and how safe it is. Spicy CV-22 fast rope discussion. Naturally Peaches height is an obstacle that must be overcome to reach the fast rope.
Surmounting Obstacles
Aaron talks about persistence. Make sure you check out his story about becoming a PJ here. The man knows about persistence.
Realize that obstacles are coming. Plan and overcome. Pretending they’re not there is detrimental long term.
Brian and Peaches talk about obstacles in daily life. Don’t ignore issues that will become bigger.
Obligatory joke about how short Peaches is.
Trent talks about prioritizing the obstacles and also determining if they are actually obstacles between you and your stated goals.
Ignoring Your Weaknesses
Peaches brings up training to your weakness as opposed to training what you’re already good at. Don’t only run if you’re already a good runner. Focus on training outside your comfort zone.
Brian talks about getting stuff done now, Burn the Boats. Set your precedence. Don’t procrastinate.
Peaches and Aaron point out the fact that if you don’t take care of the little obstacles they weigh you down. Discipline equals freedom.
External Obstacles
Trent overcomes his skinny issue through positive internal dialogue and perspective. Uses difficult times from the past, reach back moments, to get him through hard events.
Aaron uses a Pitch Perfect reference to exact revenge on someone who didn’t think he could become a PJ. In hindsight the people telling Aaron he wasn’t going to make it may have aided in his success. Don’t fuel the hatefire.
Brian talks about some of the obstacles he faced during his training. No background in the military. Not the biggest guy. Fireman carries.
Brian discusses how Major Adrian impacted his life and perspective.
Internal Dialogue
Peache’s internal dialogue is critical and dark. Being self critical and holding yourself to a high standard is important.
Brian talks about keeping perspective on other folks negative opinions. Don’t let it get you down. Find multiple points of view, and a recruiter.
Trent talks about breaking large obstacles into smaller more manageable chunks. The pipeline is designed to put you in a place to be successful. Don’t view the pipeline as a single insurmountable obstacle.
Brian and Peaches: The more difficult the task, the greater the satisfaction.
Peaches: Well, unless anybody has any parting shots, I'm going to close this out. We've talked about overcoming obstacles both internal and external to your life. So identify those obstacles, find ways to attack them. Don't shy away from them. Attack them and get to your end goal. Whether that is finishing the pipeline and getting your beret, whether that's getting the check engine light on your car, figured out. Don't shy away. Don't ignore the obstacles because they're not going anywhere. You're going to have to overcome them and face them at some point. So attack those obstacles and get after it.
